Built for FUJIFILM X-mount mirrorless digital cameras, this fast zoom further distinguishes itself with a sophisticated design, highly effective optical image stabilization system, and a Triple Linear Motor AF system for refined focusing performance. In regards to the optical design, this lens incorporates five extra-low dispersion elements and one Super ED element, which reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for increased clarity and color accuracy. Additionally, a Nano-GI coating has also been applied to elements to alter the refractive index between elements, to minimize surface reflections, and to prevent lens flare and ghosting. Additionally a rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when working with selective focus techniques. The Fuji 50-140mm f/ is a workhorse. It’s a rugged and reliable lens that delivers consistent and pleasing results; which is lucky, because it’s the only 70-200mm equivalent lens available in the X-mount system. Build quality and handling The lens itself is well built, weather resistant and feels solid. The Fuji 50-140mm was tested in rain, snow and cold conditions and didn't miss a beat. The accessories though do not inspire the same confidence. The tripod collar on the test sample was wobbly, no matter how much it was tightened. The collar screws felt as though they were threaded wrong. When attached to the body, there was a little more movement at the mount than usual. Handling The operation of the zoom, aperture and focus rings is very smooth. The Fuji 50-140mm doesn't extend when zooming which makes it compact and after carrying it for multiple hours and miles the weight 995g was noticeable but not excessive. The OIS is noticeably noisy, and when not in use makes audible clunking noises. Autofocus The Triple Linear Motor is as advertised...fast, silent and accurate. Coupled with the new wide tracking mode of the X-T4 I achieved a very good rate of acceptably sharp images in a variety of challenging situations. Face-detection with the Fuji 50-140mm worked equally as well as any other LM lens from Fujifilm. Autofocus issues One repeatable issue seems to occur when focusing on closer 1–5m objects at 140mm's. The autofocus pulses, whether in single or continuous and fails to lock on. Zooming out by as little as two or three millimetres fixes the issue, with the lens instantly acquiring focus. This issue was reduced after updating the lens and body firmware but does still persist in some circumstances. Image quality There's a visible vignette throughout the zoom range when shooting wide open. This is easily corrected and disappears by f/ Center sharpness is very good throughout the entire range. Corner sharpness is pretty good wide open and very good when stopped down to f/8. The right edge of the lens tested was soft wide-open, suggesting some level of decentering. Minimum focus distance The Fuji 50-140mm f/ has a minimum close-focusing distance of 1 meter feet. For those people, this is really their only native option within the X-Mount system and is therefore an easy choice. You could compare it to the XF 55-200mm but the price and feature set are very different between the two lenses. Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/ R OIS WR Handling and Features The combination of high-quality plastics and metal used in the construction of this lens, has resulted in robust build, whilst striking a very good compromise between build quality and weight. At 995g it isn't as heavy as you may expect. As a result it compliments the Fujifilm X-T1 used for testing very well. Focusing and zoom are performed internally, so the filter thread does not rotate during operation and the lens does not extend. As a result, the 72mm filter thread does not rotate, making it perfect for use with polarising and graduated filters. A deep, petal-shaped hood attaches to the bayonet around the front of the lens. The manual focusing ring is smooth to operate and well damped. Those wishing to manually focus on fast moving subjects may find the amount that the focus ring needs to be moved is a little too much for their tastes, as it has a long travel. As a side effect of this, fine adjustments are a pleasure. As is the case with Fuji's other X-series optics, this lens has a manual aperture ring for selecting your desired setting in a more traditional way. The aperture ring is clearly marked and it provides control in third-stop intervals and only requires a light touch to move through the aperture range. This is great for making quick adjustments. Auto focus is quick and precise, with little hunting for focus, even in low light. The optical stabiliser this lens is equipped with keeps the viewfinder image uncannily steady, which aids accurate autofocus and composition with a telephoto lens. So long as a short pause is given for the image stabiliser to settle, sharp handheld shots are possible around half the time at 1/4sec, which is between five and six stops slower than might be considered safe without the system.
